As you know from our March 22, 2013 e-bulletin, Sedgwick is preparing for the health care industry’s conversion to the 10th edition of the International Classification of Diseases code set (ICD-10). The industry-wide move from ICD-9 to ICD-10 will occur on October 1, 2014.
The national ICD-10 initiative is a significant overhaul of the diagnostic and procedural medical coding system mandated by the federal government for use in the health care industry in insurance processing, reimbursement, and statistical data gathering. Implementation will include conversion from approximately 15,000 ICD-9 codes to more than 75,000 ICD-10 codes.
What you need to know
On October 1, 2014, the ICD-10-CM (diagnosis) and ICD-10-PCS (inpatient procedures) are replacing the ICD-9-CM diagnosis and procedure code sets.
- ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes will be used by nearly every U.S. provider across all health care settings.
- ICD-10-PCS procedure codes will be used only for hospital billings for inpatient hospital procedures.
- The compliance dates set by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services are firm and not subject to change.
Sedgwick plans to be fully compliant with ICD-10 requirements by October 1, 2014, and we are taking the necessary steps to ensure that all systems and processes will accommodate ICD-10 codes by the federal compliance date.
